In Sims 2, what happens when two teen sims are dating and one becomes an adult earlier than the other?

If the teenage boyfriend becomes an adult and his girlfriend is still a teenager because they’re grow-up times are a little off, are they still dating or does it cancel their relationship? Does anything change?
Can they go out again once the other sim grows up?
